Climbing Matters for mental health

Two people indoor rock climbing on a colorful wall with safety harnesses.

Empowering Lives Through Climbing

Climbing Matters is a program of lived experience coaching and indoor climbing designed to strengthen our mental health  By confronting and overcoming the physical, emotional and psychological barriers of climbing, clients develop powerful mindsets that can be applied to their daily lives, fostering personal growth and resilience.

The course is part of the national 'green social prescribing' (GSP) program, a way of connecting people to nature-based activities in their local community to support their mental health and wellbeing. It is part of the GreenSpace project, a GSP programme led by Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service (NCVS) and the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board.

About Climbing Matters

Background

Background

Background

A Cornishman by birth and Nottingham resident for over 20 years, I have been a climber and mountaineer for over 40 years. I have lived with the lingering effects of trauma for most of my adult life and use my lived experience to help others explore and improve their mental health.

Philosophy

Background

Background

Climbing is by its very nature full of emotions - positive and negative! If you want to climb you must be able to respond to these emotions appropriately. Being able to recognise, manage and respond to your emotions is the foundation of good mental health.

Course

Background

Course

The course is 2 hours a week for 5 weeks, at a suitable climbing venue. All equipment is provided and qualified staff supervise the climbing. Each session starts with a discussion of a particular emotional challenge of climbing and all participants receive a certificate on completion, recognising their efforts.
